Electronic waste is prohibited from being placed in the trash in Washington. Legislation was passed in January 2010 (E-Cycle Washington) that requires electronic waste to be recycled or donated instead of landfilled, due to hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium, and mercury found in components.

Notable items that should not go in the trash are computers, monitors, televisions, laptops, e-readers and dvd players.
